Ben Wolcott of Burns, Tennessee, led the way at open qualifying for this week’s News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot, posting 10-under 61 at Willow Creek Golf Club to secure a spot in this week’s field at Knoxville’s venerable Fox Den CC.
In the Web.com Tour’s final Monday qualifier of the season, Wolcott rose to the occasion with an impressive 11-birdie, one-bogey performance. The recent Ole Miss graduate will make his first career Web.com Tour start, and he hopes to announce himself in a big way on a course that traditionally requires bushels of birdies in order to contend.
Brad Hawkins of Knoxville earned medalist honors at the Three Ridges GC site, where he paced the field with a 9-under 63 effort that included nine birdies and nine pars.
The 2016 Tusculum College alum will make his first Web.com Tour start, on the heels of a victory at the GPro Tour’s Charlotte Classic earlier this summer, and he’ll hope to find similar success this week at Fox Den.
Also advancing from the Willow Creek site were Casey Flenniken (62), David Gazzolo (62), Tayler Termeer (63), Brad Adamonis (64) and Stephen Gangluff (64). Adamonis and Gangluff served a 4-for-2 playoff.
Also advancing from the Three Ridges site were Andy Pope (64), Joey Garber (64), James Devault (65), Mike Van Sickle (65) and Nathan Stamey (66), who advanced via a 6-for-1 playoff.
