Michael Thompson had an up-and-down season on the PGA TOUR, finishing 145th in the FedExCup standings, but on Sunday at the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Kraft Nabisco, there was no worry about his future in this game.
After a three-shot victory, which included a sizzling Sunday 64, Thompson – who watched his beloved University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team defeat the University of Mississippi in a nail-biter Saturday – was headed back to the TOUR.
He said he couldn’t have done it without the flat stick. The 31-year-old admitted Sunday his putter was the key club in his bag this week.
“I think I had 25 putts yesterday and 27 today. I made the key putts I needed to coming down the stretch,” Thompson explained. “I made a lot of great par-saves on Friday and (Saturday), and I couldn’t have done it without that.”
Thompson was eighth on TOUR this year in Putts Per Round (Round 4) and that showed Sunday at Hillcrest Country Club.
He now heads to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship at No. 1 on the Web.com Tour Finals money list, the PGA TOUR firmly in his sights.
Besides that sizzling putter, here are the other clubs Thompson wielded to victory in the Potato State.
