Let's take a look at Ben Crane's victory at last season's FedEx St. Jude Classic and more by going Inside the Numbers ...
0 Number of birdies by Ben Crane in the final round of last season’s FedEx St. Jude Classic. … Hard to believe, but it’s true. Crane was just the third player (it’s been done five times) since 1983 to win a TOUR event without a final-round birdie. Crane did have a total of 15 birdies on the week. The previous player to win without a birdie came at the 2005 FedEx St. Jude -- Justin Leonard.
25 of 30 Ben Crane’s scrambling in winning last season. … Not sure what’s more remarkable here. The fact that Crane actually won despite missing 30 – 30! – greens in regulation on the week, or the fact that he got up-and-down on 25 of those missed greens. Crane also saved par 14 of 15 times from the rough. TPC Southwind is known for smaller greens, so scrambling is definitely a key stat this week.
4,255 Total number of water balls at the FedEx St. Jude Classic since 2003. … That’s the most on any TOUR course during that period. In fact, it’s 1,400 more than any other course – TPC Sawgrass is second at 2,855. The 12th and 18th holes at TPC Southwind account for 32 percent (1,363) of the total number of balls in the water at this course. With a crazy 891 water balls since 2003, the 15th hole has the most of any hole on TOUR during that time period.
