Expert Picks: Farmers Insurance Open

January 21, 2013

The PGA TOUR's West Coast Swing continues this week at Torrey Pines with the Farmers Insurance Open. Here's how the PGATOUR.COM experts sized up the top contenders:

How it works: Our experts from PGATOUR.COM select the player they think will win this week's event by using a draft process (no two picks can be the same). The player who wins the previous week picks last the following week.

Expert Pick Order Player Selected
Amanda Balionis pick order PHIL MICKELSON: It's tough to not use Phil with the No. 1 pick this week based on his birdie-filled weekend at the Humana Challenge. No one knows the two courses better than Lefty, who's won here three times.
Anne Szeker pick order TIGER WOODS: There are certainly guys coming into this week who have more momentum, but I'm going to disregard his missed cut at Abu Dhabi. Instead, I point to his record at Torrey Pines: Seven career wins.

If Szeker had the first pick ... Woods

Brian Wacker pick order BRANDT SNEDEKER: I'm bullish on Snedeker this season. He's also finished in the top 10 each of the last three years at Torrey Pines, which includes a win in 2012, a runner-up in 2010, and a T3 in 2007.

If Wacker had the first pick ... Snedeker

Helen Ross pick order CHARLES HOWELL: He comes to San Diego on the heels of a tie for third and a playoff loss on Sunday. Not to mention, he's got four top-10s at Torrey, including two runners-up. Surely that six-year victory drought will end soon.

If Ross had the first pick ... Snedeker

Mike McAllister pick order BUBBA WATSON: Bubba is a collective 25 under in his last two starts at Torrey Pines. That includes a win in 2011, when he shot 16 under. Four of his last six starts here have been T13 or better.

If McAllister had the first pick ... Watson

John Swantek pick order RICKIE FOWLER: Farmers University Day is Saturday, preceding Fowler's traditional Sunday OSU attire. That's a lot of orange in 48 hours, to go along with his usual red numbers at Torrey, where Rickie has never finished out of the top 20.

If Swantek had the first pick ... Woods

Chris Dunham pick order NICK WATNEY: Great track record here, including a dramatic win here in 2009. Finished T60 last year, but found form late in 2012, winning The Barclays and soon-to-be-official CIMB Classic, and should be set for a big year.

If Dunham had the first pick ... Fowler

John Schwarb pick order DUSTIN JOHNSON: Already has a win this year and is always comfortable around bomber-friendly Torrey Pines. His power is even more suited for the South Course, especially the mammoth par-5 18th.

If Schwarb had the first pick ... Woods

Ryan Smithson pick order KEEGAN BRADLEY: Has more than enough firepower for the South Course. Bonus? He also hits it straight. I love that Keegan is a good putter on poa annua. Had a good start (tied for fourth) to 2013 at Kapalua.

If Smithson had the first pick ... Snedeker

Bill Cooney pick order HUNTER MAHAN: This is not a bad week to have the last pick. Mahan is always solid at Torrey Pines -- sixth here the last two years -- and he's going to win this event before his career is up. Usually a hot player early in year.

If Cooney had the first pick ... Woods
