Mizuno unveils new MP-20, MP-20 MMC and MP-20 HMB irons

For Mizuno’s new line of MP-20 irons, the company has drawn inspiration from a classic Mizuno blade: the TN-87, which hit the Japanese market in 1987. Like the TN-87, the new MP-20 irons will have a layer of copper underneath the visible surface of the irons to enhance feel.
While the irons are not available for purchase with the copper finish, here is a look at what’s underneath the hood, so to speak, of the retail irons.
The materials used in the irons includes 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel, soft carbon plating and Nickel Chrome – Mizuno calls this construction “Layers of Feel,” in its marketing materials.
“If you could peel back the chrome plating, you would find a sandwich of nickel and soft copper before the Grain Flow Forged HD chassis,” said David Llewellyn, R&D Director at Mizuno Golf, in a press release.
The MP-20 iron family, which consists of the MP-20, MP-20 MMC and MP-20 HMB irons, will be available for pre-sale on September 5, and they will hit retail on September 20.
Mizuno MP-20
The forged muscleback irons are Grainflow forged from a billet of 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel with a layer of soft Copper sandwiched between layers of Nickel Chrome. The cavity of the irons also features a channel, and the upper portion of the blades have a progressive weight placement throughout the set, with more weight in the upper portions of the short irons for lower spin and trajectory. The toplines of the MP-20 blades are thinner than those of the previous MP-18 irons, as well.
The MP-20 blades (3-PW) will also be available in an SEL (special edition lefty) option. The clubs will come stock with True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 shafts and Golf Pride Z-Grip cord grips, but other options will be available at no upcharge. Sets will sell for $1,299.95.
Mizuno MP-20 MMC
The MP-20 MMC irons use a multi-material construction that features progressive titanium muscle plates and tungsten sole weights to increase playability. Compared to the MP-18 MMC irons, the MP-20 versions have a thinner topline and refined scoring lines, according to the company.
These irons (4-PW, RH only) come stock with KBS Tour $-Taper shafts and Golf Pride MCC grips. They will sell for $1,224.95 per set.
Mizuno MP-20 HMB
Mizuno’s new “performance hybrid” irons, as Mizuno characterizes them, use different materials throughout the set. They have Chromoly 4135 faces in the hollow-bodied long irons (2-7 irons) along with tungsten weights in the sole, the 8-iron is made from Chromoly 4135 but without a tungsten weight, and the 9/PW are forged from 1025E with partially hollow cavities.
The MP-20 HMB irons (3-PW) will come stock with Nippon Modus shafts and Golf Pride MCC grips, selling for $1,399.95 per set.
