Players in this week's Sony Open in Hawaii field will have the opportunity to test out PING's new G400 Max driver. The equipment manufacturer wouldn't comment on the TOUR-only launch, but based on what's currently available in the driver lineup, it's possible G400 Max is a higher Moment of Inertia (a measure of forgiveness) version of the standard model that debuted last year at the U.S. Open.
While PING was able to increase MOI with G400 by 3 percent and club head speed by an additional 0.75 mph, they did so in an unconventional way, reducing the head size from 460cc to 445cc.
Without a standard 460cc head in the lineup, the Max version could potentially fill a void for the golfer who's looking for even more forgiveness in their driver. With the PGA Merchandise Show only a few weeks away, it's likely PING will release details on the driver in Orlando.
