Tiger Woods will have more than new clubs in his bag as he makes his return to professional golf at the Hero World Challenge. The 14-time major winner will debut a prototype of his signature golf shoe, the Nike TW '17.
Woods and Nike Senior Director of Athlete Innovation, Tobie Hatfield, began the TW '17 design process last year over dinner at the Greenbrier Classic, where Woods noted his new swing had shifted his "dominance from his left leg to his right."
Over the next seven months, Hatfield brought four prototypes to Jupiter, Florida, for Woods to test out that featured a duo strapping system. According to Nike, the straps, which also conceal the laces, were added to address Woods' need of keeping his feet secured and locked down in the shoe during the swing.
“This shoe is an absolutely integral part of my return to the sport I love and have missed so much,” Woods says. “Nike really got in the zone with me. I knew Tobie and I were on to something special back when I tried on the first prototype. I feel supreme support from this shoe which leads to the utmost confidence when I step onto the course."
Earlier this year in April, Woods started wear testing a finished version of the shoe on the course. It's the only golf shoe he's worn since returning from surgery.
Woods was first spotted wearing the shoe during an appearance at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley Golf Club, where he conducted a clinic for the players in the field.
Nike's TW '17 will be available in Spring 2017. Additional details on Woods' latest shoe will be available in the coming months.
The new prototype shoe features straps which conceal the laces for a more secure fit.
