MEMPHIS, TN -- Daniel Berger became the 13th first-time winner on the PGA TOUR this season with his three-shot win at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. On a TPC Southwind course that puts a premium on driving accuracy, Berger excelled with a new TaylorMade M2 driver and M2 3HL fairway wood in the bag.
With a Monday practice round at Oakmont Country Club under his belt, Berger arrived in Memphis and informed TaylorMade Tour reps that he was in need of a new driver. Along with building another R15 430, his current driver at the time, reps built him an M2 on request.
During testing, Berger saw his ball speed increase from the mid-170s to nearly 180 mph, maxing out at 179 mph on a few occasions. His carry numbers were between 315-335 yards.
With the new driver in play, Berger averaged 309.9 yards off the tee (T5) and hit 60 percent of his fairways for the tournament (T11). He finished fifth in the field in strokes gained: off-the-tee (plus 4.564).
