Charl Schwartzel shot a final-round 4-under 67 to win the Valspar Championship on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. On a day when birdies were few and far between, the South African made his move thanks to a couple of lengthy birdie putts on the back nine that vaulted him into contention.
Schwartzel used his Nike Method Origin B1-01 prototype putter to make a 64-foot birdie bomb on No. 13 and another 23-footer on No. 17 that got him to 7 under and ultimately into a playoff with Bill Haas that he won with a two-putt par.
Nike has yet to release the Method Origin, but it's already being used by a few high-profile Nike athletes, including Rory McIlroy (Method Origin B2-01). The putter has a similar head shape to the Method 001 model Schwartzel had been using. The noticeable difference includes four small weight ports in the sole — two in the heel and toe — and a redesigned polymetal groove pattern on the face.
The low-durometer polymetal groove technology has been used on recent Nike putters to reduce skidding on the greens and get the ball rolling faster.
Schwartzel ranked 12th in strokes gained putting for the week (plus 3.545) but was fairly pedestrian on the greens before picking up more than 3 shots on the field (plus 3.081) with his flatstick during the final round.
