Odyssey gives Mickelson gold putter

By Jonathan Wall, PGATOUR.COM Equipment Insider

Phil Mickelson received some shiny hardware (the Claret Jug) for his win earlier this season at The Open Championship at Muirfield. On Tuesday night at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, Odyssey added a new piece of hardware to Mickelson's ever-growing collection — a gold-plated Versa No. 9 putter to commemorate the victory.

Over the years, Odyssey has given gold putters to players who use one of the company's putters to win a major championship. Odyssey has two putters made, giving one to the player and housing the other inside the Ely Callaway Performance Center in Carlsbad, Calif.

The gold version Mickelson received was built to the exact specs of his current flatstick, down to the custom ProType black shaft. Mickelson reportedly liked the putter so much, he jokingly asked if he could put it in play this week at East Lake.

The five-time major winner started working with Versa No. 9 (White/Black/White) at the Northern Trust Open and went back and forth between the putter and an Odyssey Black Series Tour Design No. 9 over the next three months.

Mickelson eventually made a few adjustments to the Versa No. 9 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and has stuck with the putter ever since.
