Equipment roundup: Farmers Insurance

Nick Watney spent some time early in the week at the Farmers Insurance Open testing out new 3-woods. Looking to hit the ball a little higher and shape it more than with his current 14-degree VR_Covert Tour 3-wood, Watney tried out a VR Pro Limited Edition, a VR_S Covert and some additional VR_S Covert Tour models to achieve the desired ball flight.

After extensive testing on the range, Watney decided to keep his current VR_S Covert in the bag and adjusted the loft from 14 degrees to 15 degrees.

Jason Day starts new season with TaylorMade R1, Lethal ball: Jason Day arrived at Torrey Pines with some new items in his golf bag: a 10.5-degree R1 driver -- neutral face angle and draw-biased shot shape weights -- and TaylorMade's new Lethal golf ball. The Aussie spent time testing out both during the offseason and felt extremely comfortable putting both in play for his first event PGA TOUR event of the season.

Seung Yul Noh sticks with current driver shaft: Seung Yul Noh continued to test new shafts in his VR_S Covert Tour driver early in the week. He tested out some Graphite Design shafts but ended up sticking with his Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage.

Lucas Glover puts TaylorMade R1 in play: It took two weeks of testing but Lucas Glover finally an R1 driver in play at the Farmers Insurance Open. Glover had the shot shape weights adjusted, swapping his neutral-bias setup in favor of a toe-weighted, draw-promoting setup.

Divots: Casey Wittenberg and Steve Marino switched into Adams Idea Super hybrids at the Farmers Insurance Open. Both players opted to go with a 19-degree Adams Idea Super LS. ... Stephen Ames tested out VR_S Covert Tour fairway woods early in the week and had the lie on his VR Pro Blade irons adjusted from 1.5-degrees flat to standard. ... Sean O'Hair switched to a TaylorMade Ghost Tour SE-62 putter. ... Richard Lee tested out a Ping Anser driver with a Mitsubishi Kai li 60-x tipped a half-inch. ... Tag Ridings switched to an Odyssey Versa #1 Wide (white/black/white). ... Patrick Reed put a Graphite Design G-series 90X in his Nike VR_S Covert Tour driver and VR Pro Limited Edition 3-wood. ... Mike Weir added a TaylorMade RBZ Stage 18.5° 5-wood.
