In the last four years, the Shaw Charity Classic has announced record-breaking charitable giving on the PGA TOUR Champions, having raised over $13.8 million for youth-based charities in Alberta.
In 2016, the tournament shattered its previous ambitions of $4 million by raising $5,217,713 for 124 charities across Alberta in partnership with Canadians from coast-to-coast. In the tournament's milestone fifth year, a goal of raising $6.2 million for charity has been set, hoping to amount to a total of $20 million in five years.
2017 marks the third year of a charitable program called Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink (BFK). BFK is a non-profit program run under the Calgary Shaw Charity Classic Foundation. The Foundation was formed in conjunction with the Shaw Charity Classic golf tournament as the philanthropic arm. In 2017, the program will help fund 157 Alberta-based charities in their pursuit of building future champions.
The motto for the tournament's charitable efforts is "Helping Kids. Changing Lives". BFK is a program designed to help raise funds for local charities, engage the community in the tournament, and provide matching funds for each charity involved. The program itself acts as a partnership builder between donors and charities, as all money will flow through the Calgary Shaw Charity Classic Foundation towards Alberta charities. All administrative costs and efforts for the program including website administration, credit card fees, promotional materials, invoicing, etc. will be covered by the Shaw Charity Classic tournament. This means that 100 percent of all donated funds through the Foundation will go directly to the charity selected.
