The stage is set for an epic finish to the 2019 PGA TOUR Champions season this week at Phoenix Country Club.
The playoff format awards double points in the three playoff events – including this week’s Charles Schwab Cup Championship – and guarantees fireworks. The player with the most points in the season-long race wins a $1 million bonus, with those who finish second through fifth also sharing bonus money. The Charles Schwab Cup Championship offers a $2 million tournament purse.
Season-long points leader Scott McCarron and Jerry Kelly are facing strong challenges from two of the Schwab Cup’s storied performers in five-time winner Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie.
Langer won his first Schwab Cup in 2010 and then three straight beginning in 2014. Langer won the top bonus of $1 million on each occasion. In each of those three years, Montgomerie finished second to win $500,000. After Kevin Sutherland ended Langer’s run in 2017, the German regained the season-long bonus last year.
Langer and Montgomerie are primed again for another run. Montgomerie won the Invesco QQQ Championship Sunday on the first hole of a playoff against Langer.
“It's given me an opportunity to go forward next week, so we'll see how it goes,” Montgomerie said.
