It’s come down to this: A six-man charge for the Charles Schwab Cup and the cash.
The PGA TOUR Champions’ season-long race for the Charles Schwab Cup, with its $1 million annuity to the winner, is the prize for one of the six golfers still with a chance to win it all this week at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club.
They are Bernhard Langer, Scott Parel, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jerry Kelly, Scott McCarron and David Toms.
Langer, the points leader, and Parel are the only two who control their destiny. Win the championship and they also win the Charles Schwab Cup. The others are mathematically alive but in addition to winning the tournament they’ll need help along the way.
Langer is looking for an unprecedented fourth Schwab Cup in five years and his game has peaked perfectly for a big finish. He won the SAS Championship in October and has been stellar in the first two Schwab Cup Playoffs events. Langer finished second at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic and T6 at the Invesco QQQ Championship.
Parel’s season-long consistency also has reached the heights down the stretch, culminating with his victory at Sherwood Country Club.
Those in pursuit must win and have things break their way. For example, Jimenez wins the Charles Schwab Cup with a tournament victory and Langer failing to finish in a two-way tie for second place.
And while the scenarios are many and varied, each of the contenders will tell you the same thing. Just win, baby. Control what you can control and let the ball stop rolling where it will.
