The PURE Insurance Championship has passed the test of time and continues to flourish.
The unique format of the PURE Insurance Championship teams a member of the PGA TOUR Champions with one of 81 young golfers from The First Tee in this week’s event hosted by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation.
The 54-hole tournament, now in its 15th year, will be played at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Poppy Hills. Each of the 81 golfers from The First Tee will join a member of the PGA TOUR Champions.
The juniors, ages 14 to 18, will compete for the pro-junior title. They will be representing First Tee chapters from 22 states and were selected by a national panel of judges based on playing ability and the application of the Nine Core Values of The First Tee.
The event has become a favorite among the PGA TOUR Champions who have embraced the opportunity to play with and mentor aspiring young golfers. Nearly 900 young golfers have played in the tournament which also has a pro-am component.
Each pairing will play a round on Pebble Beach and Poppy Hills before Sunday’s final round will be entirely at Pebble Beach.
Bernhard Langer is the defending champion. He added the fifth of his seven victories of the 2017 season last year at Pebble Beach by two shots over Jerry Kelly. Langer and his First Tee partner, Justin Potwora, won the team event.
“It’s great to be out with these kids and teach them a couple things and just be with them, it’s the future, the next generation.” Langer said.
