There are seven PGA TOUR Champions players - Fred Couples, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Larry Mize, Jose Maria Olazabel, Vijay Singh, Ian Woosnam - competing in the Masters as past champions of the prestigious event. Here is a dialy updated look at how they are faring at Augusta National.
Round 1 on Thursday belonged to, no surprise, Bernhard Langer. He defies his 61 years on earth and continues to prove that age is indeed just a number. Langer made three birdies on his front nine and closed at 1-under, 71 and is T21. He made the turn at 2-under and made bogey on 10 and then made eight straight pars to finish his day. Langer will have an excellent chance to make the cut for a second straight year at the Masters. It would his 26th made cut in 36 starts. Langer won the Masters in 1985 and 1993.
Sandy Lyle, who won in 1988 and is making his 38th start at the Masters, turned in a respectable 1-over, 73 in Round 1. He is in a tie for 44th. The Scot made the turn in 1-under and stumbled a bit on the closing nine with three bogeys.
The other five PGA TOUR Champions players struggled in Round 1. Most surprising was the early 78 (+6) from Fred Couples. The 1992 Masters winner made the turn in 2-over and then had a few big-number holes on the back nine. He made a five on 12 and a seven on 15.
Larry Mize finished at 5-over, Jose Maria Olazabel turned in a 6-over while Vijay Singh and Ian Woosnam both finished at 8-over.
Singh tripped up out of the gate with bogeys on holes one and three. He didn't made his first birdie until hole 12.
