PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – PGA TOUR Champions announced today the 2017 tournament schedule, featuring 26 official tournaments and two “Challenge Season” events. The 23-event Regular Season will again highlight the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs, which will be used to determine the season-long Charles Schwab Cup champion. The Tour will contest events in four countries and 18 states, with total prize money of $55.7 million.
The 2017 season will feature five tournaments with new host venues, including Trump National Golf Club outside Washington D.C., Salem Country Club in Peabody, Mass., Caves Valley Golf Club in suburban Baltimore, Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Wales and Phoenix (Ariz.) Country Club.
The season will begin with the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, set for the week of January 16-21 in Ka’upulehu-Kona, Hawaii. Thirteen-time PGA TOUR winner David Toms, who turns 50 on January 4, is expected to make his PGA TOUR Champions debut. Toms will be joined by fellow rookies Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly during the 2017 season.
Stricker, who is tournament host of the American Family Insurance Championship, turns 50 on February 23, 2017, and is expected to compete on PGA TOUR Champions during a year in which he’ll serve as Captain of the United States Presidents Cup team.
After a successful debut in 2016, the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs will again highlight the 2017 season, featuring a 72-player field for the Dominion Charity Classic at the Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course (Oct. 16-22), a 54-player field for the PowerShares QQQ Championship at Sherwood Country Club (Oct. 23-29) and a 36-player field for the season finale at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, which moves to Phoenix Country Club (Nov. 6-12) for the first time in tournament history. The club served as host of the PGA TOUR’s Waste Management Phoenix Open 38 times between 1932 and 1986.
This past year, World Golf Hall of Fame member Bernhard Langer claimed an unprecedented fourth Charles Schwab Cup title after putting forth a dominant four-win season on PGA TOUR Champions.
“The inaugural Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs were a great success and further amplified the strength of our Regular Season events as we determined the best player on PGA TOUR Champions,” said PGA TOUR Champions President Greg McLaughlin. “The 2017 season will further continue our efforts to expand the Tour’s footprint internationally while putting forth some of the top events and venues in the game for our players.”
The five major championships on PGA TOUR Champions will kick off with the Regions Tradition, which returns to Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Ala. the week of May 15-21. The KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship will be contested the following week at Trump National Golf Club near Washington D.C.
The final three major championships of 2017 will be held during a five-week stretch in the summer, beginning with the U.S. Senior Open at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Mass. the week of June 26-July 2. The Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship will move from June to July in suburban Baltimore at 2002 U.S. Senior Open host Caves Valley Golf Club (July 10-16), while the Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex will be contested at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Wales (July 24-30) for the second time in four years, dating back to 2014.

In September, PGA TOUR Champions will contest the first PGA TOUR-sanctioned event in Japan, with the inaugural JAPAN AIRLINES Championship set for the week of September 4-10. The tournament, which will be played at Narita Golf Club in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, will feature a $2.5 million purse and a field of 68 professionals, including up to eight local sponsor exemptions.
PURE Insurance will assume title sponsorship of the annual Pebble Beach Golf Links event that features participants from The First Tee. The PURE Insurance Championship will be held September 18-24.
The schedule will feature two “Challenge Season” events, beginning with the Diamond Resorts Invitational the week of January 9-15, and the PNC Father Son Challenge, which will be contested in December on a date to be announced. The event’s 2016 playing is set for this weekend in Orlando.
Each event in 2017 will be televised nationally in the United States, with most receiving coverage on Golf Channel, the Tour’s exclusive cable-television partner that reaches some 80 million homes in the United States. Four events will have network coverage on the weekend (NBC: Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex, PNC Father Son Challenge; FOX: U.S. Senior Open).
