Couples commits to Regions Tradition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Regions Tradition announced today that crowd-favorite Fred Couples has officially committed to play June 5-9 at Shoal Creek for the $2.2 million purse in the second major championship of the Champions Tour season.

Couples, a recent inductee to the World Golf Hall of Fame, will compete for the third time in the Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek. His best finish was last year when he finished fourth at 10 under. Recently selected as captain of the Presidents Cup's U.S. team, Couples still competes on the PGA TOUR and is currently 14th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings on the Champions Tour.

“We are always holding our breath on Freddie, but we are thrilled to know that he is headed to Shoal Creek,” Regions Tradition tournament director John Marovich said. “Couples tops off our already incredible field and this year’s committed list is the best we have had out at Shoal Creek. The fans are sure to see some of the most exciting golf we have had in Birmingham next week at the Regions Tradition.”

Other stars committed to the field are Bernhard Langer, Mark O’Meara, Fred Funk and two-time defending champion Tom Lehman. Champions Tour rookies playing for the first time in the Regions Tradition are Rocco Mediate, Steve Elkington, Esteban Toledo and Duffy Waldorf.

Players have until 4 p.m. CT on May 31 to officially commit to the tournament. The field will be published on and PGATOUR.COM.
