Although Casey Wittenberg had a fairly pedestrian Sunday as compared to his playing competitors at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open presented by NACHER – he made three birdies and one bogey for a closing 69, while Xinjun Zhang, Aaron Wise and Adam Long, who finished second, third, and fourth alone respectively, shot a combined 21-under-par – it was Wittenberg who walked away with the title.
The Oklahoma State graduate won this same event in 2012, which kick-started a memorable season for the 32-year-old, who would go on to win once more and capture Player of the Year honors.
Wittenberg said after his round Sunday that he knew going into the finale it was going to be difficult for everyone else to eclipse his lead.
“If I could shoot anything under par, it would be hard for anyone to catch me,” he said. “I was fortunate to make a birdie on No. 4 and then just kind of plodded along. I was able to make a good birdie on No. 17 as well, which was great.”
Wittenberg isn’t a long hitter, averaging just 270 yards off the tee for the week, but hit 70 percent of the fairways and 80 percent of the greens this week en route to his victory.
Here are the clubs that sealed the deal, for the second time at Le Triomphe G&CC, for Wittenberg.
