CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA – The PGA TOUR, Karibana Golf Club and Sport Link officials made two related announcements involving the Web.com Tour and the PGA TOUR’s TPC Network of golf properties.
First, the newly named TPC Cartagena at Karibana in Colombia will become the first TPC property in South America, effective this summer. Additionally, a new Web.com Tour event will be played at the resort, beginning in 2015. The Karibana Championship will feature a 144-player field and a purse of $700,000. It will be part of the Tour’s early-season launch in Latin America in 2015. A four-year agreement, through 2018, is in effect.
The announcement strengthens the PGA TOUR’s presence in the region, which includes five 2014 Web.com Tour events in Latin America and the launch of NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica in 2012.
The development of the property is being led by the Mildenberg family of Bogotá, Colombia. It is anchored by a Nicklaus Design championship golf course, which opened for play in December, 2012 and provides a spectacular setting on the Caribbean Sea on Colombia’s northwest coast.
“The PGA TOUR is delighted to have our first South American TPC located in such an iconic destination city and magnificent golf course development,” said David Pillsbury, president of PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties. “Our TPC team has been working with the Mildenberg family for several years and has watched the project grow from concept to reality. We are proud of our affiliation with the Mildenbergs and their partners and we welcome TPC Cartagena at Karibana to the prestigious TPC Network. We look forward to many years of great professional competitions in Cartagena, Colombia and creating TPC magic day in and day out for our members and guests.”
"The Web.com Tour is extremely excited to bring another event to Colombia and to host it at TPC Cartagena at Karibana," said Bill Calfee, president of the Web.com Tour. "We've had great success in our first five years in Bogotá through the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship presented by Claro and believe the Karibana Championship in Cartagena will be another terrific event for our players and golf fans in Colombia."
The Karibana Championship joins the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship presented by Claro, which debuted on the Web.com Tour schedule in 2010, in spotlighting Colombia on the international golf stage.
“Karibana is very proud and excited to be South America’s first TPC property and to host a new Web.com Tour event, the Karibana Championship,” said Joseph Mildenberg, Director of Sales and Marketing of TPC Cartagena at Karibana. “We look forward to welcoming the great players of the Web.com Tour and golfers from around the world to our world-class facility and Nicklaus Design golf course.”
"We at Sport Link look forward to continuing the strong partnership we have built with the PGA TOUR," said German Calle, Jr., president of Sport Link, the Bogota-based sports marketing company that will run both the Karibana Championship and Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship presented by Claro in Bogotá. "Bringing another premier event to Colombia will only help to further spread the beauty and culture the country has to offer and expand the nation's reputation as a true golf destination."
“Cartagena is a magnificent destination and this is a wonderful opportunity to reach the global golf audience with our many offerings,” said Dionisio Vélez, the mayor of Cartagena. “It's an honor for Cartagena to host an Official Event of the PGA TOUR and the government is committed to making the event a total success.”
With the addition of the Karibana Championship, the Web.com Tour has events in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Panama.
