NOTE: The second day of LIVE@ coverage will begin at 9 a.m. ET on Friday.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Nationwide Tour will conduct its first LIVE@ event on PGATOUR.COM next Thursday, June 11, and Friday, June 12, from the Knoxville Open presented by Food City.
LIVE@ is an additional element to a recently-announced initiative that is designed to enhance the Tour's video presence on PGATOUR.COM in 2009.
PGATOUR.COM will stream live footage of every group that plays the par-3 16th hole at Fox Den Country Club during the first two rounds. Interviews with players will also take place at the tee when circumstances permit. Select players will be invited to come to the announcing tower at the 16th for post-round interviews.
PGATOUR.COM will stream the action both days. John Swantek, Brian Katrek and two-time Nationwide Tour winner Carl Paulson will provide the commentary.
Fans interested in viewing LIVE@ should go to the [Nationwide Tour homepage] on PGATOUR.COM.
Last month, the Nationwide Tour, in conjunction with the Tour's umbrella sponsor, Nationwide Insurance, announced plans to feature expanded high-quality coverage, player and tournament features and other weekly programming on PGATOUR.COM to meet an ever-growing demand for more Nationwide Tour content on golf's No. 1 Web site.
With its "Birdie for 30" promotion attracting a crowd, Fox Den's 16th hole is the place to be at the Knoxville Open. For every birdie made on the 214-yard hole, spectators may purchase beverages for $1 for up to 30 minutes after a birdie is recorded.
Last year, there were a combined 43 birdies made on the 16th hole on Thursday and Friday.
"LIVE@ on PGATOUR.COM is an exciting step in our broadening efforts to engage Nationwide Tour fans via the Internet," said Nationwide Tour president Bill Calfee. "We think fans of the Nationwide Tour will enjoy the debut of this fresh and unique new programming element. As evidenced by the traffic we see on PGATOUR.COM, there clearly is fan demand for additional video coverage such as LIVE@ on the Nationwide Tour."
"The Knoxville Open presented by Food City is very happy to participate in the Nationwide Tour's first LIVE@ venture," said tournament director Matt Wright. "The 'Birdie for 30' program has evolved into a great spectator activity at our event. With LIVE@, we will be able to share the tournament competition and the fun we have in Knoxville with a much broader audience."
Examples of the enhanced programming content that will be added to PGATOUR.COM this year include "Nationwide Tour Weekly," a show that features winners' interviews, competition recaps and tournament previews. Content that personalizes Nationwide Tour players will also be produced, including segments for the Emmy-nominated "Outside The Ropes" franchise. Select events will have live streaming of player interviews and, in some cases, interviews with celebrities who participate in the Tour's pro-am events. All content will be archived on pgatour.com/video under the new Nationwide Tour channel.
LIVE@ is the live streaming franchise on PGATOUR.COM that made its debut at the PGA TOUR's 2000 PLAYERS Championship and covered all the action from the famous 17th island green at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. This franchise has been one of the pioneering products in delivering live golf to audiences on the Internet and, over the years, has been a popular offering in helping golf fans get connected to the game.
The Knoxville Open presented by Food City is celebrating its 20th year on the Nationwide Tour along with three other original stops that are still on the schedule, Boise, Idaho; Springfield, Mo.; and Wichita, Kan. The Nationwide Tour was launched in 1990.
