IRVING, Texas -- Paul Casey knew he had played well on the back nine Friday at the HP Byron Nelson Championship. But not until his caddie started adding up the numbers did he know exactly how well.
Try an 8-under 27 en route to a 63 that vaulted him into a tie for the lead at 6 under midway through the second round.
Casey became the eighth player in PGA TOUR history to shoot 27 for nine holes. That's one shot off the all-time TOUR record of 26 held by Corey Pavin, set in 2006 on the front nine of his first round at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee.
"I had no concept of what I was doing," Casey said.
Casey was 2 over through six holes, but his second shot at the par-5 seventh to set up an eagle putt from inside 10 feet got him going.
He did bogey the ninth, but after making the turn, he birdied the par-4 10th and 11th holes.
Parred the 12th.
Made three straight birdies at the par-3 13th, par-4 14th and par-4 15th.
Eagled the par-5 16th.
Parred the 17th.
Then finished with a birdie at the par-4 18th.
"The seal was broken when I got to 10," Casey said. "It just spiraled from there."
Casey's previous best for nine holes on the PGA TOUR was 30, which he has done twice, including earlier this year at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
But 27 puts him in another stratosphere.
"I like to think I would be pretty good at shooting low rounds of golf through the past," Casey said, "but certainly nothing like that."
