Players still have limited opportunities to qualify for next week's THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass' THE PLAYERS Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

The winner of this week's Wells Fargo Championship earns a PLAYERS berth if he is not yet exempt. Derek Ernst earned an 11th-hour PLAYERS bid when he won last year's Wells Fargo Championship.

J.B. Holmes can qualify for THE PLAYERS by earning eight FedExCup points this week to fulfill his major medical extension; a 63rd-place finish is worth eight points. The two-time PGA TOUR winner has made the cut in 10 of 11 starts this season; his T11 at last week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans was his third consecutive top-20. Holmes has two top-10s in seven PLAYERS appearances, highlighted by a T6 in 2011.

There are currently 149 players qualified for THE PLAYERS, though players like Tiger Woods, Chez Reavie, Scott Piercy and Miguel Angel Jimenez are not expected to tee it up. Players have until 5 p.m. Eastern to commit to THE PLAYERS. The tournament estimates there are seven players whose participation is in question.

THE PLAYERS has a 144-man field, though all qualified players will compete if more than 144 are eligible. If fewer than 144 players qualify, the field will be filled by the current season's FedExCup points list as of April 27. The top three players in the FedExCup not yet exempt for the PLAYERS are Will MacKenzie (15th in the FedExCup), Russell Knox (27) and Ryo Ishikawa (29). The alternate list also is determined by the current season's FedExCup.
