A bad day was made worse for Luke Donald after he was penalized two shots on Augusta National's ninth hole. Donald left his third shot in a greenside bunker, then touched the sand before attempting his next shot. He was penalized two shots for grounding his club in a bunker.
The two-stroke penalty resulted in a quadruple-bogey on No. 9. He also had double-bogeys at Nos. 1 and 6, and bogeys on Nos. 5 and 18. He had birdies on Nos. 2, 3 and 15.
Donald has shot over par in the first round in seven of his 10 Masters starts, but Thursday's score was his highest in 33 rounds at Augusta National. He has missed the cut in just two of nine starts. He has three top-10s at Augusta National, including a career-best T3 in his debut in his debut in 2005.
Donald sent the following tweets after completing his round:
Got a 2 shot penalty on the 9th today. Left my bunker shot in the bunker and touched the sand before my next shot. Pretty dumb mistake— Luke Donald (@LukeDonald) April 10, 2014
I can accept the odd poor shot but making a mistake like that is pretty frustrating and so unlike me.....— Luke Donald (@LukeDonald) April 10, 2014
Oh well, nothing I can do about it now, brush it off and try and make a bunch of birdies tomorrow.— Luke Donald (@LukeDonald) April 10, 2014
