PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Riviera Country Club has toasted Hollywood glitterati and hosted the best on the PGA TOUR since 1926.
Fred Couples, who won the tournament in 1990 and '92 and finished second on three other occasions, will be making his 32nd start in the Northern Trust Open this week. He's in one of this week's Featured Groups, and PGATOUR.COM takes a look at some of the others below.
Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth and Fred Couples (12:01 p.m. PT, 3:01 p.m. ET on Thursday): Couples, the three-time and undefeated U.S. Presidents Cup skipper, plays with his two Captain's Picks on last year's team. Simpson, who tied for sixth here a year ago, won the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open last fall while the 20-year-old Spieth, winner of the 2013 John Deere Classic, has held at least a share of the lead at the midway point of his last two starts.
Jimmy Walker, Jason Dufner and Keegan Bradley (12:12 p.m. PT, 3:12 p.m. ET on Thursday): Walker is the hottest golfer on the planet right now with wins in three of his first eight starts this year, including Sunday's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Walker has two ties for fourth at Riviera while Bradley lost in a playoff to Bill Haas in 2012. Dufner, who won the PGA Championship last year, is playing for the first time since the TOUR left Hawaii in January.
Matt Kuchar, Ian Poulter and Hunter Mahan ((12:01 p.m. PT, 3:01 p.m. ET on Friday): Kuchar, who is playing for the first time since the Sony Open in Hawaii, hasn't finished lower than a tie for eighth in three starts this season. Poulter finished second at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and is making his third start of the year, as well. Mahan comes to Riviera with momentum after top-10 finishes each of the last two weeks.
Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose and Jim Furyk (12:12 p.m. PT, 3:12 p.m. ET on Friday): Johnson birdied three of his last four holes at Pebble Beach on Sunday to put the pressure on Jimmy Walker before settling for second place in his first start in five weeks. Rose has taken an extended break, as well, due to tendinitis in his right shoulder and is making his first start on TOUR in 2014. Jim Furyk came off an even longer break last week at Pebble Beach, playing for the first time on TOUR since last year's TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola and tying for 35th.
