Peter Uihlein has become the first American to win the European Tour's Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award.

The 24-year-old started the 2013 season with a Challenge Tour card but also took full advantage of invitations to several European Tour events. When he won the Madiera Islands Open, Uihlein earned full playing privileges on the European Tour.

Uihlein also recorded a pair of runner-up finishes, as well as a total of eight top-10s. His second runner-up finish came at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship where he nearly posted the first 59 in European Tour history -- instead settling for a 60 at Kingsbarns when his eagle putt missed the mark..

Uihlein, who finished 14th in the European Tour's Race to Dubai, is the 49th recipient of the Sir Henry Cotton award. Among others who have earned top rookie honors are Sir Nick Faldo (1977), José María Olazábal (1986), Colin Montgomerie (1988), Sergio Garcia (1999), Ian Poulter (2000) and Martin Kaymer (2007).

“It’s an honor to win the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award,” said Uihlein, who reached world amateur No. 1 in 2010. “I wasn’t expecting it, but it’s been a great year and I’m very pleased. I think I’m the first non-European to win it, so that’s a great honour. Any time you’re the first of anything, it’s neat."
