Tommy Gainey had success in his first trip to Kapalua. He finished sixth in January in his Hyundai Tournament of Champions debut. It was Gainey's best finish of the 2013 season.
He'll have to win this week's OHL Classic at Mayakoba, the final PGA TOUR event of 2013, if he wants to return to Kapalua. The Hyundai Tournament of Champions, which will be held Jan. 3-6, is open to winners of PGA TOUR events in the previous calendar year.
There are eight players at Mayakoba this week who participated in this year's Hyundai Tournament of Champions but are not eligible for the 2014 edition: Gainey, Mark Wilson, J.J. Henry, Johnson Wagner, Scott Stallings, Scott Piercy, Ben Curtis and John Huh. Wilson (2009), Wagner (2011) and Huh (2012) are former Mayakoba champions.
This will be the final event of 2013 for most of the field. Some are looking to crack the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking to earn an invitation to the Masters. The OWGR's top 50 on Dec. 31 receive those prized invitations. Four players in the Mayakoba field are ranked between Nos. 40-75 in the OWGR and not yet exempt for the Masters: Scott Piercy (No. 47), Tim Clark (63), Robert Garrigus (67) and Luke Guthrie (74).
