JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Less than 24 hours after Keegan Bradley set a course record at Liberty National, Kevin Chappell broke it.
Chappell made nine birdies and no bogeys on a sun-plashed afternoon in Saturday's third round of The Barclays, where he moved from 43rd to second and is currently just two shots off the lead.
It's the second 62 of the season for Chappell, who recorded one earlier this year in the final round of the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation.
He also moved into the top 10 in the projected FedExCup standings after starting the week 58th in points.
Chappell got off to a good start with a birdie from just behind the 10th green. He rattled off five straight pars before back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16 and 17.
Then he really got hot.
Chappell rolled in a 10-footer for birdie on No. 1 before adding four more birdies on Nos. 3 through 6. Two holes later, he reached the par-5 eighth in two and two-putter for another birdie.
"My game hadn't shown much lately, but I've been working hard," said Chappell, who hasn't finished in the top 25 since early June and earlier this week put in 2 hours of work with his coach Mark Blackburn on Tuesday. "It paid off today."
Chappell hit 11 of 14 fairways and 15 greens in regulation, taking just 24 putts along the way.
"I got some good breaks," he said. "I played from the wrong fairway twice, but took advantage of the breaks and holed the important putts."
