Ryder Cup Europe announced Friday that starting in 2016 the European Ryder Cup captain will be selected by a five-man panel.

The panel will be made up of the three previous Ryder Cup Captains, the European Tour’s chief executive and one representative from the European Tour’s tournament committee. Paul McGinley, Jose Maria Olazabal and Colin Montgomerie will be the three Ryder Cup captains on the panel that will select the 2016 captain. The 2016 Ryder Cup will be held at Hazeltin National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

The European Ryder Cup Captain, from the 2016 contest onwards, will be decided by a select five-man panel; it has been announced today by Ryder Cup Europe.

The 2016 captain is expected to be named in early 2015.

“It was felt that this change would see the most suitable candidate being invited to follow on from Paul McGinley at Hazeltine,” said Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup director. “The job of Ryder Cup Captain is an ever expanding and ever demanding role, and I think this decision perfectly focuses the three vital ingredients required in any selection process.”

McGinley will be Europe's captain for next year's Ryder Cup.
