WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. -- A 59 wouldn't be unprecedented at The Old White TPC. After all, Stuart Appleby fired one in the final round to win the inaugural Greenbrier Classic in 2010.
Johnson Wagner is threatening the number on Thursday, too, playing his first 14 holes in 8 under. He shot 29 on the front nine of the scenic par-70 layout, then added a 7-footer for birdie at No. 11 and holed an 84-foot wedge shot for an eagle at the 12th.
Wagner has two par 3s, one par 5 and a par 4 remaining. The first round is being contested with preferred lies after heavy rains earlier in the week.
Wagner is tied for the lead with Tommy Gainey, who has just birdied the 16th and 17th holes to get to 8 under. He opened his round with two birdies, then added four straight starting at No. 8.
Webb Simpson, who has top-10s in his last two appearances at The Greenbrier Classic, is alone in third at 6 under through 16 holes. Nine players are tied at 4 under with four already posting 66s -- Brendon de Jonge, Peter Hanson, David Mathis and James Driscoll.
