ARDMORE, Pa. -- Hunter Mahan entered this week ranked 32nd on the PGA TOUR in driving accuracy, hitting fairways at a 65 percent clip.
On a tight course like Merion where fairways hit may prove to be the most significant factor, Mahan has raised his game. He leads the entire field in driving accuracy through two rounds at an 89.3 percent clip.
It's no wonder, he starts his round at 1 over par, just two shots off the lead.
Mahan missed just one fairway in the first round and just two in the second round. His accuracy has him at 1 over through 36 holes.
"Hit fairways, hit greens, play to my strengths and play as good as I can," Mahan said.
Although he's trying to chase down his first major, Mahan said he will not concentrate on the leaderboard.
"The leader is irrelevant," Mahan said. "You're just trying to play good and hit your shots.
"Thinking about the lead or your position is a waste of time because it's a tough golf course. You're going to make mistakes; they're going to make mistakes."
