If you've been waiting for an opportunity to go off the board, then the FedEx St. Jude Classic presents a golden opportunity.
Taking a peek at my Power Rankings, Brandt Snedeker (No. 1) and Charles Howell III (No. 2) are chalk choices, but this event barely cracks their personal top 20s among tournament earnings. It's yet another reason to roll the dice on a hot hand.
This is why I'm burning Scott Stallings. He's coming off back-to-back fourth-place finishes. He also played well enough at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Memphis on Monday to nab first-alternate status before getting into the field at Merion when Roger Chapman withdrew on Tuesday.
Stallings is making his third appearance at TPC Southwind, where he tied for 25th in his first in 2011. He also went to high school and college in Tennessee and still resides there. State pride cannot be quantified, but pursuit of it should not be ruled out.
If you're looking for someone with more wattage, the deeper you get into the top 20 in earnings at this tournament, the more attractive your choices become. Robert Karlsson ranks 12th; defending champion Dustin Johnson is 13th; and steady Freddie Jacobson sits 16th. All demand our attention unless, of course, your format excludes defending champions. Even John Merrick at 19th plays into the hands of two-man games.
