Rory McIlroy has committed to play in the Shell Houston Open, the tournament announced on Wednesday.
It will be McIlroy's third time playing the event, which moved from the week before the Masters to two weeks prior to the year's first major. McIlroy last played in Houston in 2010, missing the cut. In 2009, he tied for 19th.
"A commitment from the No. 1 player in the world, especially one who is going to help us raise money for a tournament charity, is very special for our event," tournament director Steve Timms said on the tournament's website.
McIlroy is the third player currently in the top 10 in the world scheduled to play in Houston March 25-31 at Redstone Golf Club. Louis Oosthuizen and Lee Westwood are the others.
Through McIlroy's 6 Bags Project, the Northern Irishman will also help generate funds for Chinquapin Prep, which serves economically disadvantaged youths in the Houston area. During the tournament, McIlroy will have a special golf bag with the Chinquapin Prep logo, which will then be auctioned off through McIlroy's foundation.
