SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Waste Management Phoenix Open set a single-day attendance record on Saturday with a number that many PGA TOUR events would love to have for the week.
The crowd was announced at 179,022 -- which beats last year's all-time record by 5,812 people.
The biggest week ever was in 2008 when J.B. Holmes beat Phil Mickelson in a playoff and a total of 538,356 fans flocked to the course. If at least 71,327 fans attend Sunday's final round the weekly total will also be a record.
The crowd at TPC Scottsdale on Saturday would have been Arizona's eighth-largest "city" and would be 17,303 people larger than the nearby city of Tempe.
