Paul McGinley was appointed captain of the 2014 European Ryder Cup team on Tuesday.
The 46-year-old Irishman beat out Colin Montgomerie, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Sandy Lyle and Paul Lawrie.
McGinley played on three victorious Ryder Cup teams from 2002 to 2006. In nine matches, he earned 4 1/2 points. He was also an assistant captain on each of the last two Ryder Cup teams.
Europe will defend the trophy at Gleneagles, Scotland.
