Jeff Maggert has missed the cut in nine of last 12
starts entering this week, but reaching the weekend shouldn’t
be a problem this time. Maggert opened with a 4-under 66 at the
FedEx St. Jude Classic on Thursday that included four birdies and
an eagle and gave him the early clubhouse lead before John Merrick
joined him at the top. It was Maggert's first round in the 60s in
his last 14 rounds on the PGA TOUR. It’s no surprise that
Maggert played well at TPC Southwind – his last win on TOUR
came in this event in 2006. “I played some good golf
today,” said Maggert, who had shoulder surgery a year ago.
“I’ve been struggling a little bit but I’ve
always felt comfortable on this course." Maggert eagled the par-5
third hole with a 324-yard drive, followed by a second shot that
landed 7-1/2 feet from the pin. “That was a putt I was
supposed to make,” Maggert said. “I’d been
kicking myself if I had missed it.”
