Putting powers Singh

By Brian Wacker, PGATOUR.COM

BETHESDA, Md. -- Vijay Singh came into the week ranked 178th in strokes gained-putting, so he figured it was time to change something.

He put a new putter in play this week at the AT&T National, then went out and shot a 3-under 68 on an extremely difficult Congressional Country Club.

Singh took 26 putts Thursday and though he missed three from inside 10 feet, it was a step in the right direction for the 49-year-old.

“My theory was if I get it close enough I don't need to putt,” Singh said. “It doesn't work after a while.”

Actually it did, at least on the 10th hole.

Singh missed the green left on the par 3 but chipped in for birdie.

It was the fifth birdie of the day for Singh, but he’d give three of them back with bogeys on Nos. 11, 12 and 13 before rallying with birdies on two of his final three holes.

“I don't think I need to tweak anything,” Singh said. “I just need to go out there and do the same thing and stop missing those greens with 8- and 9-irons. If I can get that under control, I think I can do well.”
