Sunday’s overcast skies finally opened up on the last group on the last hole, but it wasn’t enough to slow the victory march for Michael Allen and David Frost.
The team that tied for third a year ago at the Liberty Mutual Insurance of Golf won it this time, posting 29 under at Savannah Harbor Golf Resort. They shot 10-under 62 in the final round.
The pair parred the final four holes but got the shot of the day at the short par-4 14th when Frost chipped in for eagle off the front of the green. That put them to 29 under and ahead for good.
Former Ohio State University teammates Joey Sindelar and John Cook finished second at 28 under.
It’s the second win in as many weeks for Allen, who won his Champions Tour debut at the 2009 Senior PGA Championship but failed to win in his next 40 starts over two seasons until last week at the Encompass Insurance Pro-Am of Tampa Bay.
Frost had one previous Champions Tour title, the 2010 3M Championship.
Allen said earlier in the week in Savannah that his goal this year was to win the Charles Schwab Cup, and he’s on his way, holding the points lead as the season’s first two-event winner.
