Notes from inside the ropes

By Fred Albers, PGATOUR.COM Correspondent

HONOLULU – Sony Open in Hawaii co-leader Matt Every supports the "Wounded Warriors" foundation.  He has the logo on his golf bag and has a special connection with his caddie Lewis Puller.

Puller is the grandson of Marine legend Lewis "Chesty" Puller, who is the most decorated Marine in the Corps’ history.  Lieutenant General Puller is the only Marine to ever be awarded  five Navy Crosses.  Marine Corps recruits are still reminded, "Chesty never quit" during their basic training. …

Duffy Waldorf made his first visit to Hawaii back in 1980.  As a high school senior, he and SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio announcer Dennis Paulsen both played in the Junior America's Cup.  Waldorf did not win and does not recall what place he finished but he did remember, "Dennis and I had a whole lot of fun here." …

Whales frequently can be see off the coast of Maui during the winter but rarely by Oahu.  So, it was very unusual when a pod of whales made its way into Honolulu harbor earlier this week.  Marine biologists say it was a group of females who were trying to get away from a pod of male whales.  It seems whether it's whales or a high school prom, nature never changes.
