ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- A pair of 4-foot birdie putts on Nos. 15
and 16 have pushed Webb Simpson into a first-place tie with Michael
Thompson during the second round of the McGladrey Classic. Simpson,
who finished tied for 12th in this event last year, opened with a
7-under 63 but was 1 over after six holes Friday. He strung
together two birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 before his pair on the back
nine to pull even with Thompson, who played in Friday’s
morning wave. Also making a move is Billy Horschel. Playing in the
same group as 21-year-old Bud Cauley, Horschel is the second player
in the afternoon wave (after Simpson) to reach 9 under. Horschel
has seven holes remaining in his second round.
