If not for a bogey on No. 17, Kevin Kisner would be alone atop the
leaderboard at TPC Southwind. With that lone bogey dropping him to
4-under though, Kisner will have to settle for a share of the early
lead with John Merrick and Kris Blanks at the FedEx St. Jude
Classic. His 4-under 66 was the first sub-70 opening round of the
rookie’s career. “It's always tough to get off to a
good start, Kisner said. “You can't win it on Thursday but
you can sure lose it.” Kisner won the Mylan Classic last year
en route to an 11th place finish on the Nationwide Tour money list
to secure his 2011 PGA TOUR card. He’s made three cuts in 12
starts, with his best finish a tie for 39th at the AT&T Pebble
Beach National Pro-Am in February. Three of his fellow Nationwide
Tour graduates -- Keegan Bradley, Jhonattan Vegas and Brendan
Steele -- have already won as rookies on TOUR this year. Kisner
knows he has work to do if he wants to become the fourth. “I
gave myself a good shot at it,” he said. “Look forward
to getting it back going tomorrow.”
