MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.
|No. 16||Par 3||198 yards|
Donald’s feeling it now. His tee shot is championship-quality, finding the green just 13 feet, 3 inches from the pin.
Kaymer must answer with something spectacular. His tee shot also lands on the green but on the back edge past the pin, inside 29 feet. Not good enough.
Kaymer must make his birdie putt. But it slides by. The par putt is conceded.
Donald can now seal the championship with a two-putt. He misses the birdie putt but is conceded the tap-in par. The Accenture Match Play championship is his, 3 and 2 over Kaymer.
It is well deserved. In six matches over 89 holes, Donald never trailed at any point. He never had to play the 18th hole and only played the 17th once. And with the win – his third on the PGA TOUR but his first in five years – he’ll move into the No. 3 spot of the Official World Golf Rankings.
Kaymer’s consolation prize? He’ll be No. 1 when the next rankings come out Monday.
