New Breed appears up to the test

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- One of the PGA TOUR's themes this year is the New Breed vs. the Establishment. Each week, PGATOUR.COM is picking one player from each camp to feature -- this week, for example, it's Rickie Fowler for the New Breed vs. Davis Love III for the proverbial old guys. "I've talked about Fowler a lot," Rocco Mediate said Tuesday. "I love him. He's just what we need. A break of fresh air and can play his butt off. See, there is the difference. He has the look, but he backs it up in  numbers. Anthony's the same way. ... There are a lot of good young players. But experience does do something for you. This is year 26 for me. "It's different, but these kids when they come out they know what they're doing. When I came out, I had no idea what I was doing back in 1986. I learned to play on the TOUR. You don't get to do that anymore. If you step out and you're not ready, you get stepped on and thrown out the door and these kids come out gunning. "I think it's cool. We need that. We need people to keep picking it up and try to get after Phil and get after Tiger and get after all the top guys because that's what they're supposed to do. You're supposed to want to be with these guys in the final round or the first two rounds, for that matter. "… It's the greatest test you could ask for.” Mediate will get the best of both worlds on Thursday and Friday when he plays with Tiger Woods and Anthony Kim in the first two  rounds.
