The PGA TOUR’s 59 club seems to be having a meeting this week
in San Martin, Calif. Three of the five players who share the
TOUR’s all-time low scoring mark are in the field this week.
Both players who reached the historic mark in 2010, Paul Goydos and
Stuart Appleby, are teeing it up at CordeValle. Goydos has finished
his first round and his 65 has him tied for the lead. Appleby is
even through four holes. David Duval, whose final-round 59 netted
him a victory in the 1999 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, shot a 3-under
68 today in spite of three bogeys. Duval entered the week at No.
109 on the money list. That round currently ties him for 9th, a
good position because a top-10 finish would likely move him inside
the top 100.
