Mathew Goggin didn’t exactly come into this week riding a wave of momentum. Well, not a positive one anyway. Goggin has missed seven of his last nine cuts and for the year has missed 11 of 16. So what was the difference Thursday, when he shot a bogey-free 6-under 64?
Missing just two fairways and two greens in regulation didn’t hurt. The wind was also down -- on the back nine, it can be particularly tricky with a lot of shots climbing above the tree line, but it wasn’t in the opening round.
Goggin is also back to using his regular driver after switching to a slightly longer one at the start of the season.
“I started swinging the club wrong and had some bad habits for whatever reason,” Goggin said. “You lose a bit of confidence.”
Six birdies should give the Brit plenty of confidence going into the second round. -- Brian Wacker
