Charley Hoffman stumbled in, missing the green on his approach to the par-4 ninth, then failed to get up-and-down to save par. Still, his 4-under 68 leaves him just two shots off the lead late in the opening round at TPC San Antonio. Hoffman wasn’t exactly a picture of accuracy out there, hitting just 43 percent of his greens in regulation and just over 55 percent of his fairways, but he also took just 25 putts. Hoffman isn’t exactly known as a great putter, but he got the ball up-and-down well enough on most of his holes to get in the house with a good number.
Meanwhile, San Antonio resident Jimmy Walker is 3 under with two holes left in his round. Arjun Atwal and Garth Mulroy are at that number, too, with four holes to play. Mulroy has made just one cut in eight events this season, but that came just two weeks ago at Quail Hollow so maybe he has at least a little momentum going for him. -- Brian Wacker
