FedExCup preview: Phil Mickelson

Live Report Image

The top 30 in FedExCup points are headed to East Lake for the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola. Here’s a look at Phil Mickelson, one of the 30 players who will contend for the FedExCup title.

SCENARIOS TO WIN FEDEXCUP: Mickelson controls his own destiny for the FedExCup:
> If he wins the TOUR Championship he wins the FedExCup
> Has a reasonable chance of winning with a 2nd-place finish
> Can finish as low as a tie for fourth and still have a mathematical chance of winning

Click here for scenarios of every player

SEASON IN REVIEW: The season began with tremendous promise as Mickelson, playing with Tiger Woods, fired a final-round 64 to win the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the 40th victory in his PGA TOUR career. He nearly made it two in a row, losing in a playoff the following week at Riviera. Two months later, his bid to win a fourth Green Jacket was derailed by a triple bogey on the fourth hole Sunday at Augusta National. Mickelson only had one more top-10 until the Playoffs where he tied for fourth and second in successive weeks to vault into the FedExCup top five. -- Helen Ross

ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: Fred Albers, on-course correspondent for SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, provides a quick look at Mickelson:
I think Phil plays best when his mind is occupied. He is totally engaged right now thanks to the "paint brush," his modified claw grip while putting. Mickelson has won at East Lake before and would be a good pick next week.

SEASON IN REVIEW: Snedeker was making the rounds in the media center, thinking he had finished second, when he found out he was in a playoff at the Farmers Insurance Open. Snedeker, who started the day seven strokes back, went on to beat Kyle Stanley and win for the third time in his career -- in just his second start since having hip surgery the previous November. He posted top-10s in each of the first two Playoffs events and earned a Captain's Pick for the Ryder Cup. -- Helen Ross

The best putter on the PGA TOUR. I wonder how much gas he has in the tank after an emotional run during the FedExCup Playoffs -- when he also had qualifying for the Ryder Cup on his mind.

He was third the week before the Masters and finished fourth at the Bridgestone Invitational. The South African came up big in his first FedExCup Playoffs, too -- tying for fifth at The Barclays, finishing second at the Deutsche Bank Championship and tying for 16th at the BMW Championship. -- Helen Ross PATH TO TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP: Here’s a look at Oosthuizen's results in the first three events of the 2012 FedExCup Playoffs: Click here for Playoffs Tracker of every player.

FedExCup preview: Dustin Johnson

Live Report Image

The top 30 in FedExCup points are headed to East Lake for the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola. Here’s a look at Dustin Johnson, one of the 30 players who will contend for the FedExCup title.

SCENARIOS TO WIN FEDEXCUP: For Johnson to win the FedExCup, he MUST win the TOUR Championship and have the following scenarios fall into place:
> Rory McIlroy (No. 1) finishes in a 3-way tie for 2nd or worse
> Tiger Woods (No. 2) finishes T-2 or worse

Click here for scenarios of every player

SEASON IN REVIEW: He was sidelined for nearly three months with a back injury but wasted little time reasserting himself when he closed with a 66 to win the FedEx St. Jude Classic. The victory was the sixth of his PGA TOUR career and made him the first player since Tiger Woods to leave college and pick up a victory in each of his first five years on TOUR. Johnson seems to be peaking at the right time, too, with finishes of sixth or better in each of the first three Playoffs events -- posting eight of 12 rounds in the 60s and nothing higher than a 72. -- Helen Ross

ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: Fred Albers, on-course correspondent for SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, provides a quick look at Johnson:
The best athlete on TOUR but is like a talented racehorse that has to be guided around the track. Got a phone lesson with Butch Harmon this year and then forgot what he was suppose to practice. Caddie Bobby Brown called Harmon from the range to relay the information one more time. His swing thought: Complete the back swing. So much talent, he can win at any time.

SCENARIOS TO WIN FEDEXCUP: For Westwood to win the FedExCup, he MUST win the TOUR Championship and have the following scenarios fall into place:

SEASON IN REVIEW: The affable Englishman decided to re-join the PGA TOUR after watching the FedExCup Playoffs on TV last year and feeling like he was missing out. Westwood has posted top-10 finishes in half of his 14 starts in the States this year, including the first two majors and two of the three Playoffs events. His tie for second at the BMW Championship gave him a big boost as he moved up 23 spots in the FedExCup standings as he heads to Atlanta for the first time. -- Helen Ross

SEASON IN REVIEW: Johnson won twice during the Regular Season, accomplishing the feat for the third time in his career and bringing his career victory total to nine. He also posted two runner-up finishes -- the second of which came at THE PLAYERS, two weeks before he won the Crowne Plaza Invitational for the second time in three years. His win at the John Deere Classic (where he serves on the board of directors) was the closest thing Johnson ever has to a home game, and he capped the year by earning a spot on his good friend Davis Love III's Ryder Cup team. -- Helen Ross

EAST LAKE HISTORY: This is Johnson's sixth start in the TOUR Championship, and his first since 2010, when he tied for ninth after carding rounds of 66-67 on the weekend. Since the FedExCup began in 2007, Johnson's best finish at East Lake is a tie for second in 2007, when he posted a sizzling 60 in the third round.

ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: Fred Albers, on-course correspondent for SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, provides a quick look at Johnson:
I watched Zach shoot 60 at East Lake in the third back in 2007, so obviously it's a good course for him. Zach moved his hands slightly more forward at address while putting and it's keyed a great season. The movement is so slight, I can't see it but I can see the improved results with a pair of victories this year.

The top 30 in FedExCup points are headed to East Lake for the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola. Here’s a look at Jason Dufner, one of the 30 players who will contend for the FedExCup title.

SCENARIOS TO WIN FEDEXCUP: For Dufner to win the FedExCup, he MUST win the TOUR Championship and have the following scenarios fall into place:
> Rory McIlroy (No. 1) finishes 5th or worse
> Tiger Woods (No. 2) finishes in a 3-way tie for 3rd or worse

SEASON IN REVIEW: Forget the heartache at last year's PGA Championship. Dufner rebounded with a career year that included wins at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the HP Byron Nelson Championship in a four-week span. Oh, and he got married during that stretch, as well. Seven days after winning in Dallas, he finished second in Fort Worth. SCENARIOS TO WIN FEDEXCUP: For Watson to win the FedExCup, he MUST win the TOUR Championship and have the following scenarios fall into place:
> Rory McIlroy (No. 1) finishes T-6 or worse
> Tiger Woods (No. 2) finishes in T-4 or worse

SEASON IN REVIEW: Watson captured the attention of the golf world in April when he curved a shot out of the trees on the right side of the 10th fairway and beat Louis Oosthuizen on the second hole of sudden death at the Masters. The victory was the fourth of his career and one of six top-10s so far in 2012. He also tied for second at the Travelers Championship, a tournament he won in 2010. Watson, who made news off the course when he and his wife Angie adopted a son, has two top-12 finishes in the Playoffs, along with one missed cut. -- Helen Ross

Miller: Mickelson not 'back' just yet

Live Report Image
Little/Getty Images
Despite his midseason struggles, Phil Mickelson ranks fifth in strokes gained-putting.
By Bill Cooney, PGATOUR.COM Is Phil Mickelson back? His play in the FedExCup Playoffs would certainly indicate the affirmative. Johnny Miller isn’t so sure. Not yet, anyway. "Well, obviously covered Phil last week (at the BMW Championship), and he's still a guy that doesn't really know where the ball is going off the tee,” Miller, the NBC golf analyst, said in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday. “But he did drive it better. … But he's fun to watch. You never know where he's going to hit it. He can get it up and in from anywhere. “I wouldn't call him quote, unquote, ‘back,’ because you never know shot to shot, let alone week to week, what he's going to do.” In any case, Mickelson has done quite well of late, especially since he switched to a modified claw putting grip in the third round of The Barclays. Since his switch, Mickelson has carded eight of his past 10 rounds in the 60s to lead him to a pair of top fives at both the Deutsche Bank Championship and BMW Championship. It put Mickelson at No. 4 in the FedExCup standings, meaning he wins the FedExCup with a victory at next week’s TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola. "I'm really pleased with the way my game has come around the last two weeks," Mickelson said Sunday night after finishing tied for second at Crooked Stick in Carmel, Ind. Mickelson ranks fifth in strokes gained-putting this season, and it’s possible that more confidence on the greens has helped him tee-to-green as well. “Now that he's putting well, that takes pressure off the big game,” Miller said. “So I think that's what's happened, he's finally got true confidence in his putting and that's taken the pressure off the big game and that's helping him there, too. So East Lake, he can be a factor if he gets off to a good start.”
