Poulter, Albany win the Tavistock Cup

Albany ruined Lake Nona’s bid for a fifth consecutive Tavistock Cup title when Ian Poulter made a birdie on the first hole of a playoff.

The event, shortened to one day of stroke play because of the Monday finish to the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, saw four-man teams from Albany and Lake Nona finish the day at 7-over, tied for the lowest composite total in the six-team field.

Poulter, who shot a team-low 72 Tuesday at Isleworth, was joined by Tiger Woods (73), Tim Clark (73) and Justin Rose (77) on the victorious side. Woods joined Poulter in the best-ball playoff against Lake Nona’s Graeme McDowell and Henrik Stenson.

McDowell carded a 71 to be one of just two players in red numbers for the day. Ross Fisher (72), Stenson (74) and Peter Hanson (78) rounded out the scoring for Lake Nona.

Primland and host team Isleworth finished one shot off the pace while Oak Tree National was 12-over and Queenwood was 20-over.

Webb Simpson, representing Primland, had the day’s best round: a 2-under 70.

Full Tavistock Cup field gathers Tuesday

PGATOUR.COM staff

Tim Clark and Adam Scott carded an 8-under total in Monday’s better-ball format to post the day’s low round at the Tavistock on Monday.

Because one-third of the 24-man field was competing in the Monday finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, the opening day’s results will not count toward crowning a winner in this year’s event.

Playing in the same group as Clark and Scott at Isleworth were Ross Fisher and Graeme McDowell, who finished a shot behind at 7-under, tied with Fred Couples and Jay Haas. The pairings of Bo Van Pelt -Bubba Watson and Peter Hanson-Webb Simpson carded 6-under totals.

The winner of the Tavistock Cup will be decided Tuesday when the entire 24-man field, composed of four representatives each from six clubs, plays 18 holes of stroke play. Arnold Palmer Invitational Champion Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler, who competed in Monday’s final pairing with Woods, will be grouped with Fred Couples in the 11:05 tee time.

Tavistock expands to six clubs

By Jeff Shain, PGATOUR.COM contributor

U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and incoming Hall of Famer Fred Couples will make their Tavistock Cup debuts later this month, as rosters were finalized Tuesday for an expanded 10th edition that now features six high-profile clubs.

Simpson, Couples and the father-son duo of Jay and Bill Haas will represent Virginia’s Primland Club, which joins the competition this year along with Oklahoma’s Oak Tree National.

Charles Howell III, an Isleworth mainstay in the first nine Tavistock Cups, instead will anchor Oak Tree National’s lineup of Oklahoma State alums. He’ll be joined by Rickie Fowler, Scott Verplank and Champions Tour veteran Bob Tway.

Lake Nona seeks a fifth consecutive title in the made-for-TV competition, to be played March 25-26 at Isleworth. Graeme McDowell, the lone constant in Lake Nona’s previous wins, will be joined by Peter Hanson, Ross Fisher and Henrik Stenson.

Tiger Woods will play a third consecutive year for Bahamas club Albany, alongside European Ryder Cup heroes Ian Poulter and Justin Rose. England’s Queenwood Club rounds out the Tavistock lineup, with Adam Scott and new European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley.

With Primland and Oak Tree National expanding the competition to six clubs, rosters were reduced to four players. This also marks the first edition without Ernie Els, who played for Lake Nona and later Albany.

The rosters:

Albany – Tiger Woods, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter, Tim Clark.
Isleworth – Bubba Watson, Bo Van Pelt, Brian Davis, D.A. Points.
Lake Nona – Graeme McDowell, Peter Hanson, Henrik Stenson, Ross Fisher.
Oak Tree – Charles Howell III, Rickie Fowler, Scott Verplank, Bob Tway.
Primland – Webb Simpson, Bill Haas, Jay Haas, Fred Couples.
