The final round of the Shell Houston Open has been suspended due to dangerous weather near Humble, Texas.

With strong storms in the area, play was suspended at 4:52 p.m. ET (3:52 Houston time). D.A. Points holds a one-shot lead at 16 under through 14 holes.

This is the seventh weather delay on the PGA TOUR this season. Wind, fog, frost, thunderstorms -- and even snow -- has halted play this season.

As of 5:55 p.m. ET (4:55 Houston time), heavy rain was still falling at Redstone Golf Club.

If play resumes on Sunday, Golf Channel will carry the conclusion of the event.

The PGA TOUR is expected to give an update at 7 p.m. ET.

Mickelson has positive outlook

HUMBLE Texas -- Phil Mickelson didn’t walk away with a second win at the Shell Houston Open Sunday afternoon, but he didn’t head home empty-handed.

Mickelson took his good friend and Dr. Tom Buchholz to overtime in a game of HORSE on the driveway Saturday night before winning their traditional grudge match. Buchholz, a world-class radiation oncologist who is part of both Amy and Mary Mickelson’s oncology team at M.D. Anderson, hosted Mickelson for a grilled salmon dinner and the game at his home.

“We both had S and that kicks it into double-elimination,’’ Mickelson explained. “That saved him three times and saved me once.

“I finally got him.”

For a while Sunday, it looked as though Mickelson might make a charge. He birdied the first four holes – he hit it to 2 feet at the first hole – but then cooled off. After eight pars, he finally got another birdie, but followed it with a bogey to finish at 10 under.

“I had a lot of fun today because I got off the a quick start, and after four holes I felt the pressure of having an opportunity to win,’’ said Mickelson, who won here in 2011. “It was a fun feeling. I love playing well here. Unfortunately, I didn't do much after that.

“I knew it was going to be a shootout and I was going to have to keep going and I couldn't keep pace. I hit a lot of good shots today. I had numerous putts that came off the edge. Even though I didn't make a lot of putts today, I felt good with the putter, was rolling off the face nice, had the right speed. It was on the right line that I wanted, but I didn't read them all correctly.’’

Mickelson continues to tinker with his putting stroke and said he’ll probably go back and forth a bit, depending on the situation.

“The claw grip, what it does is gets me in a better address position where I get rid of too much forward press,’’ he said.
“I want a little bit but not as much as I've been getting. As long as I can stay in that same address position with the regular grip, I would prefer to do that, but I'll have to go back and forth as my tendency is to continue to get a little too much forward press.  With the claw grip, my hands stay a little bit higher.’’

Mickelson was expected to fly home Sunday and plans to head to Augusta late in the week to get in some early practice for the Masters.

D. Johnson posts 14 under

By PGATOUR.COM staff

Dustin Johnson put together an incredible final round at the Shell Houston Open. It just wasn't quite enough.

Johnson used an eagle at the par-5 15th (watch above) en route to a 7-under 65 to post 14 under on Sunday. He was one shot behind co-leaders D.A. Points and Billy Horschel when he finished. However, Henrik Stenson posted 15 under shortly after.

Johnson, who missed cuts in his only two previous appearances at Redstone in 2008 and '09, carded seven birdies, an eagle and two bogeys on his round and is currently tied for third place.

Despite admitting that he left some shots on the golf course, Johnson said he was pleased with his performance -- his last before the Masters.

"I knew I was going to have to come out and do something special today if I wanted to even have a chance," Johnson said. "I played really well, 7-under on Sunday, I'll take that anywhere, anytime, and be happy with it. You know, obviously I left a few shots out there, but, you know, that's golf."

McIlroy still pleased with progress

By Melanie Hauser, PGATOUR.COM Correspondent

HUMBLE, Texas – It wasn’t the finish he wanted, but, all in all, it was a good week for Rory McIlroy.

He closed with a 70 to finish at 4-under 284 before heading west to next week’s Valero Texas Open.

"It's been good,’’ McIlroy said of his 73-70-71-70 week. "Lot of positives to take from it. I've learned a few things as well that I can bring into next week and obviously looking ahead to Augusta, too. It's been a productive week. Obviously not the finish that I would have wanted, but, you know, there's still a lot of things I can take from it."

Things like working on his swing and giving his short game a workout on the shaved banks and firm greens at Redstone Golf Club.

"I think the way I've struck the ball for the most part has been really good," he said. "I think my short game has been sharp.  I think that's been, you know, a very positive sign this week.

"And, again, I just need to -- if I am going to -- everyone hits bad shots. I just got to hit the bad shots in the right places, that's the thing, and not short side myself and hit them in hazards and sort of give myself a little more margin for error, I guess."

Bradley joins the plethora of contenders

HUMBLE Texas – Keegan Bradley finally made a few putts.

Now, if he can only make a few more.

The lanky 2011 PGA champ shot put himself into position with a 67 Saturday and heads into the final round with a chance to win his fourth TOUR title.

Bradley opened with rounds of 70-70, but found his putting touch in the third round of the Shell Houston Open and that was just what he needed to jump into what promises to be a shootout.

“The greens are fast, not a lot of grass on them,’’ he said. “But you know, when you hit it in there close, it makes it a lot easier.’’

He ran into trouble at 18 off the tee and didn’t make it easy on himself at all at that point.

“It’s tough no matter what the wind is, what tees we play, where the pin is,” he said. “Got to hit a good drive. If you hit a good drive, you’ve got a tough second shot, but if you hit it in that bunker like I did… I was up against the lip and I had to lay up.’’

Regardless, he’s just two back going into the final round and one of 15 players within two shots of the lead.

“I know I'm going to have to shoot a really low round to win,’’ Bradley said. “But I put myself in a good position to do that tomorrow.’’
