FedExCup: Stallings in the Playoffs

The True South Classic provided one of the Regular Season’s final seven opportunities to accumulate enough FedExCup points for Playoffs qualification and a handful of golfers took full advantage. Champion Scott Stallings, who teed of Sunday well outside the Playoffs cutline at 163rd in the standings, locked up a tee time at The Barclays with his victory and move to No. 98 in the standings. Runner-up Jason Bohn and Josh Teater, who finished ninth, moved just inside the top 125 to Nos. 120 and 124 respectively, giving them the inside track to spots in the Playoffs. Billy Horschel, whose third-place finish was his first top 10 of the season, got a boost from 181st to 153rd in the latest standings. Still nearly 100 points out of the top 125, Horschel will need a strong finish to his Regular Season if he hopes to qualify for his first Playoffs. Despite finish, Cauley back on track

Bud Cauley’s solo 4th at the True South Classic was his best result since March.
There are a lot of positives a young pro can take from a week like this. Bud Cauley’s furious Sunday charge that featured eight birdies in 16 holes put the 22-year-old in his best position to win a PGA TOUR event. A late bogey left the rookie alone in fourth – his second consecutive fourth-place finish at Annandale. Cauley was two back with two holes to play before getting up-and-down for par on the 17th and hitting two poor shots on the closing hole which led to a bogey, taking him out of contention at the True South Classic. “I knew I had to make birdie or eagle on 18, probably eagle,” he said. “I was just trying to get the ball in the fairway somehow, made a bad swing, and hit it about the worst place I possibly could.” Cauley’s tee shot found a fairway bunker, eliminating any chance he had of going for the par-5 green in two. After laying up, Cauley attacked a tough pin from 176 yards away and found the water hazard guarding the front and left sides of the green. He wound up finishing five shots behind Stallings but the leaderboard would have looked much different down the stretch had Cauley post 21 or 22 under. After earning his TOUR card straight out of college via last season’s non-member money list, Cauley got his rookie campaign off to a very good start with seven top-30 finishes in his first 12 starts. Since then, however, he’d missed four cuts in seven starts with no top 30s. After 16 consecutive rounds in the 70s, Cauley has posted rounds in the 60s in six of his last eight times out, including three this week. “I’ve been kind of struggling a little bit but worked really hard on my game with my coach last week,” Cauley said. “A lot of positive things this week and (I’ll) try to keep it going.” Cauley will look to carry his momentum north next week. He is scheduled to play in the RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton G&CC that gets under way on Thursday.

With this victory: Scott Stallings

Scott Stallings picked up his second victory in as many years on the PGA TOUR on Sunday at the True South Classic. With this victory, Stallings: • Collects 250 points and moves from No. 163 into No. 98 in the FedExCup standings. • Sets the tournament scoring record at Annadale GC with a 264 (-24). The old tournament record, since the move to Annandale in 1994, was 266 held by Chris Kirk/2011, Fred Funk/2004, Steve Lowery/2000 and Skip Kendall/2000. • Becomes the first member of the 2011 rookie class to win in consecutive seasons. He was one of six rookie winners a year ago. • Secures the 10th victory for 54-hole leaders in 30 events this season. • Records his first top-10 finish since winning last year's Greenbrier Classic. Stallings tore cartilage in five ribs in his third start of the season at the Humana Challenge and had missed 11 cuts in 15 starts since. Stallings wins the True South Classic

Scott Stallings is now a two-time PGA TOUR winner shooting a Sunday afternoon 68 to close out a two-shot victory at the True South Classic. Stallings, who slept on a four-shot advantage last night and had a one-shot advantage after 54 holes, never relinquished his lead in Round 4. After making his first bogey since Round 1 on the 14th hole, allowing Jason Bohn to close within one shot, Stallings birdied holes 16 and 17 before parring the 18th to secure his victory. Stallings' victory and its accompanying 250 FedExCup points may be enough to put the 27-year-old into the FedExCup Playoffs for the second consecutive year. He projects to move from No. 163 in the standings to well inside the top 125. Bohn carded a 5-under 67 for the fourth runner-up finish of his career. Billy Horschel check in at 20 under for a third-place finish (the best of his career) while Bud Cauley finished another shot back in fourth.

Things getting tight down the stretch

A Scott Stallings bogey on the 14th combined with some solid play behind him has changed the complexion of the True South Classic final round. Stallings, whose bogey dropped him to 22 under, is now just a one-shot leader over Jason Bohn with four holes to play. The third member of the final grouping, Billy Horschel, is another shot back along with Bud Cauley, who has eight birdies through his first 16 holes today. Stallings' bogey was his first in 55 holes at Annandale Golf Club and just the second in the final grouping during final-round play.
